Beach: El Escabrón

(August 8th) I didn’t get to blogging until the next day… but I had a great day. I met up with Jennie in the morning and we went to the university. It was a scavenger hunt trying to find the building we wanted, but we did at last and meeting the staff for our program. They are so nice! And, actually put us in contact with a girl that arrives on the 10th. So- tomorrow evening we will have a 3 bed hostel room. There is a mini-fridge and two balconies. It is a beautiful view. AND it will mean 3 nights in the same bed…. Which hasn’t happened for me since I’ve been here. After going to the university we had lunch.

I ordered MOFONGO!! I think the name is ridiculously fun. It is pretty much a ball of plantain stuffed with whatever…. I chose chicken.

Then we spent the rest of the afternoon at the beach – called “El escabron.” The water is SO beautiful. We were swimming out sort of deep- not sure how deep, but we couldn’t touch. At least 10 feet—and we could STILL through the water. Not crystal clear or anything, but we could see the rocks and such. Very very beautiful. I just can’t get over how beautiful it is here. We took a walk down the beach and came back and took a good swim again. Then, we laid under palm tree shade and fell asleep… with fun salsa music playing in the background. The only thing I really lacked was a coconut w/ straw in my hand. (I don’t like drinking coconut water… so really, the beach was perfect.)

We were camped out over in this sandy area, but we decided to go for a little hike. There were some of the ruins of the fortress on this beach.

This beach also has its rocky parks. It was gorgeous!

We came back and cleaned up. We were very sweaty because we walked probably 2 miles back from the beach to where we are staying. Then, we had dinner in a cute little Italian restaurant. We sat outside and a starving musician came by. He said he would play a song for a dollar, so I put the dollar in the hat and he sang away. It was so fun… and so perfect. Dusk…. Puerto Rico… light breeze…. Salsa singing guitar playing man giving personal concert…. I have come to Puerto Rico to know what the word “bliss” truly means. Shortly afterwards we made friends with a guy that draws caricatures. He was sort of crazy, but we talked for a while. There was music playing in the street and each of us, Jennie and I danced with him… in the middle of the street! She danced salsa, I danced bachata. It was so fun…. And so spontaneous! Afterwards, he drew us free caricatures. I really really love Puerto Rico. I just can’t say it enough.

Until next time.....
